Frequently Asked Questions
What does "We The North" actually mean?
The Toronto Raptors are known for their anthem, "We The North," also known to as We The North Nation. It was composed by Drake, producer Noah "40", Shebib.
Drake wrote the song in Toronto while staying with a friend. He completed his album Take Care with Kanye West. Drake decided to create lyrics about his hometown, while he was there. He wanted it to be something that could represent all Canadians. The song speaks about unity and pride as well as hope.
Drake began work on the melody of We The North's single "Nice For What" when he went to London to film the video. He recorded the instrumental version in just one take.
Drake was writing lyrics for the song when 40 suggested the chorus. After hearing the hook, Drake thought it sounded like a great idea and asked if he would record it. Together, they came up with the final product.
The official music video for "We The North Anthem," was released on October 5, 2018. It featured Shawn Mendes, Canadian singer-songwriter and Drake performing with other musicians.
How long has the Raptors been in existence?
The Toronto Raptors are an NBA franchise located in Toronto, Ontario. The Raptors joined NBA in 1995 as an expansion club, alongside the Vancouver Grizzlies. The Raptors were the only Canadian-based NBA team when the Grizzlies moved from Vancouver to Memphis in 2001-02.
Toronto Raptors players Scotiabank Arena for their home games. The Maple Leafs is the NHL team from Toronto, and also uses the arena. The Raptors have appeared in the NBA playoffs 13 times since their founding, most recently in 2021, where they lost in 6 games to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs.
1999-2000 saw the Raptors make their first playoff appearance. They were swept by New York Knicks their division rivals in the first round.
There weren't many fans, and the team wasn’t exciting. There wasn't anything to root for, nor was there anyone who cared. But after years of mediocrity, the team decided to change its image and went out of its way to make itself more appealing to the public.
In 2001, the team hired a professional advertising agency to help develop a marketing strategy that would make them famous in national markets. Using creative thinking, they devised a slogan, "Hear us roar."
The slogan was used to promote the fact the games were sold out. The only thing they needed was a catchy phrase, and a great logo. This is where agency's creative genius shines. They combined the phrase "hear them roar" with another well-known saying, "never let go." This became the official motto of the Toronto Raptors.
How was the Toronto Raptors' inaugural season?
The Toronto Raptors had a terrible debut season, winning only 21 games. The 1995-1996 Toronto Raptors' inaugural season in the National Basketball Association was the first season for the Toronto Raptors. Along with the Vancouver Grizzlies, the Raptors were also one of the expansion teams that joined that league. It was also the first NBA season playing outside of the United States.
All-Star point guard and former Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas became the team's General Manager. He helped draft Damon Stoudamire to be named Rookie and Year. They also acquired Tracy Murray and Oliver Miller in separate trades. Thomas introduced a new primary symbol of a dinosaur playing in basketball and new pinstripe unis with the logo at the front of their jerseys. The Raptors added purple, and red to their new color scheme.
The Raptors' debut under new head coach Brendan Malone on November 3 ended in a victory against the New Jersey Nets at the SkyDome, but they lost their next seven games.
Murray finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game, and led them with 151 three-point field goals during that season. Miller had 12.9 points per game, 1.4 steals, 1.4 assists and 1.9 block per match, while Robertson was responsible for 9.3 points with 4.4rebounds, four assists, two steals per contest off the bench.
Despite having one of the worst records in the league, attendance was very good, as they averaged over 17283 fans per game at SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
What was the best year for the Raptors?
The 2019 championship season was Toronto Raptors' best season. It was a memorable and thrilling season for the Raptors. This was their first ever NBA Championship. Kawhi Leonard was named Finals' MVP and the team had a regular season record of 58-24. They defeated the Golden State Warriors 6-1 to claim the title.
The Toronto Raptors made a change in 2013 when they replaced Bryan Colangelo (then general manager) with Masai Ujiri. This move would herald a new age for the franchise. They would be one of the best in the NBA.
The Raptors saw a resurgence under Ujiri. In 2014, they reached the playoffs for first time since 2008. They have won five Division titles since then. Their most successful regular season was in 2018. That year also saw Ujiri make a risky but successful trade, sending DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs for Kawhi Leonard.
The Raptors had an incredible 2019, winning their first conference championship, and reaching the NBA finals. In total, they beat the Golden State Warriors six times.
Ujiri's time with the Raptors was a great success. He should be credited for helping to change the team's fortunes. Thanks to his leadership, the Raptors are now one of the best teams in the NBA and look poised to remain contenders for years to come.
The 2019 championship season will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the best years in the Raptors' history.
Ujiri as well as the Toronto Raptors must continue to build a culture that supports their players, staff and players. With continued dedication to excellence, the future looks bright for this team. The Toronto Raptors have set the bar high for 2019 with their championship season. Now, it is up to Ujiri's team to build on this success.
Who owns Toronto Raptors'?
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is the owner of the team. MLSE also has the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs as well as the MLS's Toronto FC and CFL's Toronto Argonauts. They also own the AHL's Toronto Marlies and Toronto Rock lacrosse team.
What are the five most successful Raptors per-game scorers throughout Raptors' history?
Kawhi Leonard is the most prolific scorer of the team with 26.6 per game. Vince Carter follows with 23.4, Mike James (with 20.3), Chris Bosh (20.2), and DeMar DeRozan (20.2).
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
NBA left Vancouver after a dispute regarding arena financing. The City of Vancouver was to contribute $40million towards the construction a new basketball venue. This would include 12 luxury suites as well as two restaurants, a bar and a hotel. To pay down existing debt, the City Council wanted the $60 million taxpayer money that the City Council would give to the team owner. The city would need to borrow $200 million to construct the arena. However, the owners of the team only had to repay $20 million in debt. This would leave the city's taxpayers responsible for the repayment of the remaining loan.
The City Council stated that they would be open to the plan if the NBA agreed not to leave Rogers Arena until the new facility opens. But the league refused, saying that the arena wasn’t large enough. They couldn't play there any more because the arena was too small. They felt that it was unfair for them to continue playing in a smaller space when they weren't receiving any additional revenue.
The City Council asked for financial assistance and offered to help the province. The province agreed to provide $150 million towards the project, but the City Council still needed another $100 million. At that point, the City decided to stop its plans and concentrate on building a new downtown arena.
